Cataract AwarenessSeptember 5, 2017
Protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light will protect your vision. Exposure to the sun can increase problems with the corneas, lens, and your eyelid. Did you know the area most prone to skin cancer is around your eyes? Individuals that do not wear sunglasses are at an increased risk of dealing with cataracts and other serious eye health issues. People often look for sunglasses based on the appearance and comfort, but they need to start considering their health. You want to prevent UV lighting from entering your eyes, causing damage. Here are four reasons why you need to consider wearing sunglasses:
- Protection from UV Rays – The sun’s radiation can lead to a number of health concerns. Benign growths can occur on the surface of the eyes. Temporary blindness is common when a person has too much exposure to the sun. Sunglasses provide the best layer of protection for your eyes against the sun’s rays.
- Comfortable Vision – Wearing sunglasses makes it easier to see when you are outside. If you find you are squinting when you are outside, or inside your vehicle, you will benefit from sunglasses. Do not let the sun’s brightness cause interference with your ability to enjoy being outside.
- Lighting Concerns – If you go outside for awhile, and step back indoors, you might notice your vision goes darker for a few minutes. Prolonged exposure to the sun can end up hampering your eye’s ability to adapt to indoor lighting, and it can increase vision problems as you age.
- Skin Cancer – Dealing with prolonged exposure to the sun can end up increasing the issues with skin cancer. Cancer around the eyelids is the most common issue when you are outside without sunglasses.
Wearing protective eyewear is one of the best ways to improve your eye health, and prevent permanent damage to the corneas. Always wear glasses on cloudy days and winter months as the UV light is just as dangerous in the winter as it is in the summer.
To find the right sunglasses, shop for styles that offer high UV protection. The sunglasses need to block at least 99 to 100 percent of the UVA and UVB radiation to prevent the concerns with your eye health.
